The glyphs of the zodiac; art by Smirno

A zodiac is an ancient method of dividing the sky into sections in order to track the cosmic movements of the stars, planets, and constellations with respect to the viewer over time. The word "zodiac" literally means "animal parade" and for the most part, the symbols assigned to the various sectors of the sky are named after the resemblance of the constellations within those sectors to well-known animals of the Middle East and Old Europe.
