Guan Yin, also known as Kwan Yin, Qwan Win, Guanyin, or Guanshiyin ("The One Who Perceives the cried of the World") is a bodhisattva of mercy and compassion. She is also known as Avalokiteśvara, the most recognized bodhisattva in Mahayana Buddhism, who appears sometimes in Cambodian Theravada Buddhism as Lokeśvara. Kwan Yin or Avalokiteśvara is identified interchangeably as male or female. Among eclectic folk Catholic adherents, she is sometimes identified as an entity similar to, if not identical with the Virgin Mary. In the New Age tradition of Ascended Masters, she is the Chohan of the Third and Eleventh Ray.
