Tenskatawa, known as the “Shawnee Prophet,” was born in January 1775 and died in November 1836; he was the younger brother of Tecumseh, the famous leader of the Shawnee Native American tribe. During a drunken stupor in which he had a prophetic vision, he underwent a transformative mystical experience. When he awoke, he understood and espoused the importance of living virtuously and a return to traditional Native American values.
